Sand / Land

Sand is one of the resources the world is guzzling at the fastest speed. I started researching this fascinating topic last year and began to photograph it on an artist’s residency with the Exactly Foundation. I was coincidentally asked by The New York Times Magazine to photograph a chapter in Singapore of an on-going global project for me.

Singapore is the world’s leading importer of sand. Its thirst is mainly driven by its appetite for land reclamation – it has created almost a quarter of its territory out of the sea over the decades.

This look at my native country’s use of sand and land was published in The New York Times Magazine in April 2017.

I’m continuing to work on different parts of this unfolding story for different magazines and on grants, and am collaborating with Emblematic Group for one piece of it.
