From the series, “Shifting Sands.” Malaysia. 2017.

“Windblown or washed up over millennia, sand is ubiquitous. Whether inside an hourglass or as an idiom, it often refers to the passage of time. In our time we have crossed a threshold in our use of this raw material. With the world urbanizing at an unprecedented rate, sand suitable for use in concrete has been depleted globally. Sand is finite, nonrenewable, and is the resource we use most besides water and air.

For the family pictured, this giant sand dune inside an ongoing property development project in southern Malaysia is an idyllic–if surreal–playground. The sand here smothers both sea and mangroves, transforming them into pristine parcels of coastal land on which sea-view apartments can be built.

The scale of coastal reclamation worldwide, alongside deforestation, dam-building and mining are disrupting the Earth’s sedimentation and structure. It’s one indicator that we have passed into the age of the Anthropocene.

As I build out this continuing project investigating the extraction and uses of sand, I’m also at a crossroads in my practice, questioning the nature of imagery and the relationship between the document and what transcends.”
